About "Carol of the Bells":
"Carol of the Bells" is a song based on the traditional Ukrainian folk chant created by Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leonidovich. Initially, it wasn't a Christmas carol. However, when Peter Wilhousky wrote a lyrics to it, it became viral in the United States as a Christmas carol. It is one of the most popular Christmas carols today. There are a lot of ostinato (repeated short phrases) in the melody. If you like to learn more about the story behind "Carol of the Bells," please visit our page, "About Carol of the Bells."
Tips for playing Level 4 "Carol of the Bells":
On this Level 4 "Carol of the Bells," you'll be using a very wide range of keys (from very low notes to very high notes) on the piano or keyboard. That is not very common on most piano pieces. You'll see a lot of '8va' signs throughout the song mostly for right-hand. When you see that for the right-hand, please go up one octave higher than the written notes. Once you also see '8va' for the left-hand. For that one, please go one octave lower than the written notes. When you see '15ma' for the right-hand, please go up 2 octaves higher than the written notes. We don't think the damper (sustain) pedal is necessary. However, you may experiment with it. Fingerings are not provided. The length of this Level 4 arrangement is the same as Level 5 arrangement. They both sounds almost the same. However, Level 4 is definitely easier than Level 5. Blocked octave notes and other blocked harmonic notes are removed from Level 5 to be single notes. Contrary scales don't happen like Level 5. Instead, only the right-hand will be playing scales a lot. Level 5 is written in the key of G minor. However, Level 4 is written in the key of A minor to be easier. Players especially with smaller hands can enjoy this Level 4 arrangement. It'll still sound as good as Level 5 arrangement.
