About "Moonlight Sonata":

Popularly known as "Moonlight Sonata" is Piano Sonata No. 14 in C sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia" Op. 27 by a German composer, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) from the classical era. He wrote it as a piano solo work. It is one of the most loved classical piano solo pieces in the world. "Moonlight Sonata" has 3 different movements. On this page, we offer the 1st movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of "Moonlight Sonata." It is a slow piece and the most famous movement of all three movements.

Tips for playing Level 4 "Moonlight Sonata - The First Movement":

This particular arrangement for the 1st movement of "Moonlight Sonata" is not much of an arrangement. It's very close to the original. However, players who can't reach octaves will be able to play this arrangement easily. On this arrangement, octaves and most of the tied notes are removed. And some long-held melody notes are shortened. Instead, those notes have the Tenuto signs ( - ). Please stress those notes as they are the important melody notes. The key has been shifted only a half step higher from the original key of C sharp (#) minor to D minor. Players who are eager to challenge the original "Moonlight Sonata" but who hurt their wrists or arms by straining them due to long-held octaves notes throughout the original piece can use this semi-arranged, close-to-original piece in the key of D minor. There are no fingering numbers suggested. However, the pedal markings are specifically marked throughout the piece. Please refer to the free complete audio sample on the top of this page. You may be surprised how it sounds like the original.
