About "Brahms' Lullaby"

Brahms' Lullaby's real title is "Guten Abend, gute Nacht" ("Good evening, good night"), Op. 49, No. 4. It is also often called "Brahms' Wiegenlied." It was written by a German composer, Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) from the romantic era. It was originally written for voice and piano. However, there are many arrangements for different instrumentation including orchestral version to a single music box. The melody is well-known in the world.

Tips for playing Level 3 "Brahms' Lullaby"

Brahms wrote this song originally in the key of E flat major. However, to accommodate the level 3 players, we arranged it in the key of F major which is only one whole step higher than the original key with accidentals (without the key signature). Therefore, you'll run into a lot of B flat since the key of F major has B flat in the key signature. In this Level 3 "Brahms' Lullaby," you will be playing the melody with the right hand and broken chords with the left hand. The chords are mostly, I (tonic chord), V7 (dominant 7th chord), and IV (subdominant chord). It is a good practice for Level 3 players to get used to I, IV and V7 chords in the key of F major. There are a few essential fingering numbers provided on the music score. Please take advantage of them to smoothly transition to the following passage, especially for the right hand. The damper (sustain) pedal signs are specifically marked. Please follow them as well to make the harmonic transition smooth. This song is a lullaby. So, please play slowly (Adagio) and gently, not so loud. Even though this arrangement is written for piano solo, you or someone else can sing along.
