Hanon Exercise No. 29
from The Virtuoso Pianist - Part 2 - Free sheet
This is Hanon Exercise No. 29 from The Virtuoso Pianist, Part II by C. L. Hanon. You can pick your preferred tempo. But first, it's best to practice slowly so that you can hear if you are playing every note evenly. We also highly recommend practicing with hands separately first so that you can also hear if you are playing all the notes evenly. Make sure to lift the previous finger when you go to the next finger to maximize the strengthening exercise. If you are doing well you may practice with hands together and also increase the tempo gradually. This exercise is written only in one octave. However, you may practice 2 octaves by starting one octave lower than how it's written.
Hanon mentioned that No. 29 exercise is for preparation for the trill for all 5 fingers. We would like to add to it that this No. 29 exercise is also for the alternation of the intervals 2nd and 3rd with all 5 fingers. After players increase the tempo to the faster tempo (make sure to practice slowly first, though), it really can be a good exercise for preparing for the future trills that you will encounter with any combination of fingers such as 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, and 4-5. This No. 29 exercise has no extension, and rather very closed position for the entire exercise, both in ascending and descending. Please watch for the change in the fingering with the right hand in the descending. On the 4th beat, you need to tack in the 3rd right-hand finger while descending so that you can use 3-4 at the end of each measure.
After you get good at it you can also experiment all these exercises by playing in the different key (not only in the key of C) and also experiment with different tempos. However, always follow the suggested fingerings. Fingerings are written down only in the 1st and 2nd measure when ascending section starts and when descending section starts.
