Hanon Exercise No. 30
from The Virtuoso Pianist - Part 2 - Free sheet
This is Hanon Exercise No. 30 from The Virtuoso Pianist, Part II by C. L. Hanon. You can pick your preferred tempo. But first, it's best to practice slowly so that you can hear if you are playing every note evenly. We also highly recommend practicing with hands separately first so that you can also hear if you are playing all the notes evenly. Make sure to lift the previous finger when you go to the next finger to maximize the strengthening exercise. If you are doing well you may practice with hands together and also increase the tempo gradually. This exercise is written only in one octave. However, you may practice 2 octaves by starting one octave lower than how it's written.
This Hanon Exercise No. 30 is an exercise for alternating fingers between 1 and 2 and between fingers 4 and 5. It is also a preparation to be able to play fast trills between those fingers in the future. Trills are fast. However, start practicing very slowly so that you can develop strength and independence between those fingers. Fingers between 1 and 2 are not that easy to isolate because the length of the thumb and pointing finger are quite different and they also move very differently from each other. So, this is a great exercise to get used to alternating fingers between 1 and 2. Fingers 4 and 5 are also weak fingers for most people. Therefore, this is also a great exercise to strengthen those fingers to be able to play fast trills in the future.
After you get good at it you can also experiment all these exercises by playing in the different key (not only in the key of C) and also experiment with different tempos. However, always follow the suggested fingerings. Fingerings are written down only in the 1st and 2nd measure when ascending section starts and when descending section starts.
